Situation Awareness As a Predictor of Performance in En Route Air Traffic Controllers

چکیده
In this study, air traffic control instructors controlled simulated traffic while three techniques for determining situation awareness (SA) were implemented. SA was assessed using a self-report measure (SART); a query method that removed information on the plan-view display (SAGAT); a query technique that did not have a memory component (SPAM); and the detection of errors integrated into the scenarios (implicit performance). We used these measures of SA together with a measure of workload, NASA TLX, to predict two different performance measures. One performance measure was an over-the-shoulder, subjective assessment by a subject matter expert (SME). The other performance measure was a count of the number of control actions remaining to be performed at the end of the scenario. The SME evaluation was predicted by workload and the controller's appreciation of both the present and the future. The remaining-actions count (RAC) was predicted by the controller's appreciation of the future. In fact, an appreciation of the present led to poorer RAC scores: The better the participant was at answering questions about the present or the better he or she understood the present situation, the larger the number of actions remained to be performed. The results have implications for the relationships among workload, situation awareness, and performance, and suggest limitations on several of the measures currendy proposed as SA techniques. The results confirm that future versus present is an important conceptual difference in air traffic control. More importandy, the results suggest that a controller who remains overly focused on the present may do so at the expense of the future.

A study was conducted to investigate factors underlying operational errors (OEs) in en route air traffic control. Twenty active duty controllers watched recreations of OEs and were asked to report on their situation awareness and workload on two occasions during the recreations. A total of 14 OEs were examined. Responses were analyzed to determine how subjects allocated their attention while vi...

A human-in-the-loop simulation was conducted to examine performance, workload, and situation awareness of students and retired air traffic controllers using an on-line situation awareness probe technique. Performance of the students did not differ from the controllers on many of the performance variables examined, a finding attributed to extensive sector-specific simulation training provided to...

An air traffic control system’s main function is to separate aircraft. The computer supporting the system assists the air traffic controllers by generating a conflict alert whenever it predicts that two aircraft are about to get too close to each other. The performance of the conflict alert function is a key element to the overall functioning of the air traffic control system. A set of metrics ...

Background and aim: Air traffic control has known as a complex cognitive task, which requires controller to focus on task for long time. Mental workload plays an important role in the performance of controllers. The aim of this study was to assess the workload of air traffic controller on the basis of task load factors. Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted among fo...

The MITRE Corporation’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) has developed a tool, airspaceAnalyzer, to measure sector complexity. It does so by performing automated air traffic control—separating traffic while respecting aircraft performance and restrictions on altitude and miles-intrail. It outputs a suite of raw metrics, derived from characteristics of these resolutions. W...
